China's economic rise and diplomatic initiatives to expand strategic partnerships with countries of the Global South are starting to impact on the very structure of international relations. Beijing has formed South-South relations with many developing countries and emerging economies by providing foreign aid, setting up trade agreements, making investments and employing public diplomacy. Among observers, China's changing role in the "Strategic Periphery" remains controversial. What is the motivating power behind China's drive to intensify South-South relations? And how can the risks and opportunities related to this drive be evaluated? The articles presented in this volume open up new perspectives on China's fast developing formal and informal ties to Africa, the Middle East and Latin America. Embedded in an interdependent global setting, these new developments also have repercussions on Chinese society itself, making it more diverse and international. The contributions to this volume provide insights into the rapidly unfolding trans-regional dynamics of China's South-South relations and reveal at the same time the inadequacy of the traditional architecture of area studies to take up the challenge of trans-regional research
