Beschreibung

This book examined the obstacles encountered by Tongan male learners in higher education in Aotearoa, New Zealand. A substantive review of literature to date identified the gap between policies and practices and the need to address the issue immediately. The research provided an ethnic gender-specificity approach, using Tongan research framework of kakala, talanoa, talave and talanga to provide contented time(ta) and space(va) where the experiences of Tongan male learners were appropriately unraveled. Findings from the book highlighted stumbling blocks (makatukia) and stepping stones (makatuu), such as kainga, lotu, kita and cosmos to have multifarious impact and consequences with overarching influences. This book instigates the necessity and value of using Pasifika-Tongan approach when addressing issues that affect them. In addition, it adds new understanding to the body of literature including a conceptual framework which explains that when time and space are equally and symmetrically cultivated and harmoniously navigated, success is attainable.
