Individuals with low-income bare a number of health challenges and barriers to health care services especially dental care. Oral Health is an integral component of general health and well-being. Serious conditions such as oral cancer, was shown to have an association with poor oral health status such as poor oral hygiene, dentition status and chronic periodontitis. These conditions are a significant burden among those of lower socioeconomic status and results in a substantial disparity in oral cancer mortality, oral health status and edentulism. Therefore, understanding the oral health status and related factors may provide insight on its general health and to minimize the health inequality among the low income population.

Keith Hau is currently pursuing a degree in Doctor of Dental Medicine at the University of New England. He completed his Masters of Science in Craniofacial Science at the University of British Columbia.
