Idioms are a fascinating door into the mind of English speaking society. The British, who originated the majority of these expressions, are in all, a group of people who like to express ideas and humour through word pictures. Idioms are an indication that a speaker or listener's level of language is high. Correct use of idioms not only leads to students' fluency and accuracy in productive skills such as speaking and writing but also results in higher scores in speaking and writing sections of the TOEFL and IELTS examinations. Therefore, the individual who wishes to demonstrate proficiency should take the time to make at least some of these idioms as a part of their day-to-day language. Much of English humour is in fact based upon idioms, so if you enjoy watching re-runs of Mind Your Language or some other comedy programme, understanding the flavour and colour of idioms means having a jolly good laugh.
