The novel was written in the 1960s. Nwapa became the predecessor to the present African female writers. It was she who encouraged and led other females to express, explore and share the lives of the African women via their writings. This first novel "Efuru" has always attracted numerous critics with sound discussions. The book was praised and it had its drawbacks too.
