The study examines the contribution of visuals to narration, a process proposed by Kress and van Leeuwen as 'reading images'.The picture book conveys a narrative through verbal language and visual grammar. The study explores semiotic systems in terms of image syntax, gestural, spatial and iconic signs to examine the relation between the denotation context of the narrative text and the connotation of the visual text that creates polygamous illustrations and indefinite meaning-making.

Marwa Alkhayat has been an Assistant Professor of Comparative Literature & Criticism at MISR University since 2010. She also has extensive years of teaching since 1999. She received her MA & PhD degrees in Postcolonial Drama from the University of Cairo, Egypt. She has published articles & books on Semiotics, Animation and Children's Literature.
