The works of Edward Sapir (1884 – 1939) continue to provide inspiration to all interested in the study of human language. Since most of his published works are relatively inaccessible, and valuable unpublished material has been found, the preparation of a complete edition of all his published and unpublished works was long overdue. The wide range of Sapir’s scholarship as well as the amount of work necessary to put the unpublished manuscripts into publishable form pose unique challenges for the editors. Many scholars from a variety of fields as well as American Indian language specialists are providing significant assistance in the making of this multi-volume series.

Beschreibung

Volume II of Edward Sapir's Collected Works contains the re-edition of Sapir's classic introduction to linguistics, Language (1921), enlarged with a new index, and some twenty-five articles, published between 1908 and 1939, in general, comparative and descriptive linguistics, including his publications on the African language Gweabo, on Judeo-German, and on English grammar. The majority of the articles are in the field of historical-comparative linguistics, dealing with ancient Indo-European languages such as Sanskrit, Hittite and Tocharian, and with Northwest Semitic languages (Ugaritic, Phoenician and Hebrew). The volume also contains the edition of unpublished notes of Sapir on the structure of English.
