The distance between research and practice in education is something that is often remarked on. This book is intended to speak both to educational researchers (both in mathematics education and in equity studies) and to teacher practitioners, to support a dialogue between researchers and practitioners about the important issue of developing effective teaching practices in mathematics that support the participation and achievement of all students, not just those who have historically been successful Professional development efforts in mathematics education generally acknowledge the importance of attending to the teacher, the learner, and the content. The book takes its formatting from a consideration of these three important factors. The chapters in the book are divided into three parts, one focusing on teachers, one on students, and one on the particular vehicles for engaging with the professional development content (the melding of equity and mathematics) Attending to issues of equity and diversity within the field of Mathematics Education is a relatively new occurrence. Often in the past, research in mathematics education on one hand was looked at as culture free, while on the other hand issues of equity and diversity were seen as applicable uniformly across any content. More recently, however, a growing group of mathematics educators have begun to bring together the two fields. This is a grave and timely issue for any multicultural and co-ed school
