Beschreibung
Christopher Fox is a composer - and, for decades, an attentive, committed and occasionally uncomfortable observer of the music of his time. Speaking Clearly brings together selected writings from 1985 to 2026, forming at the same time a personal history of new and experimental music across four decades. Fox writes about composers including Christian Wolff, John Cage, Karlheinz Stockhausen, Morton Feldman, Mauricio Kagel and Walter Zimmermann; about Darmstadt and the post-war avant-garde, serialism and open form, electronic music, opera, orchestras and the string quartet. These subjects repeatedly open onto larger questions: How do musical institutions and aesthetic orthodoxies develop? How can composers reach an audience? What roles do technology, politics, gender, resources and sustainability play? And what responsibilities does criticism have within a living musical culture? Originally written for journals, radio broadcasts, lectures and other contexts, the texts have been revised for this volume. One of the books defining features is a series of newly written commentaries in which Fox returns to his earlier work, reconstructing its circumstances, reconsidering earlier positions and asking what has changed - both in music and in his own thinking. Speaking Clearly is therefore much more than a collection of critical essays. Bringing together music history, analysis, personal experience and cultural reflection, it reveals how writing about music can itself become part of a compositional practice.
