Although the German composer Carl Loewe is well known for his collection of over four hundred ballads and songs, he was also responsible for many works for other instrumental combinations. 'Mazeppa' is a delightful tone poem for solo piano, in which Loewe explores a poem of the same name by Lord Byron.
