Eine olfaktorische Reise durch Korea Der südkoreanische Pavillon auf der 60. Biennale von Venedig KOO JEONG A (geb. 1967 in Seoul, Südkorea) arbeitet seit den 1990er-Jahren an der Neuerfindung von Räumen durch ortsspezifische und partizipative Installationen. KOO ist international bekannt für poetische Eingriffe in Umgebungen, um die Seele dieser Orte sichtbar zu machen. Texte, Zeichnungen, Skulpturen und Installationen werden mit Klang, Geruch und Elementen wie Wind, Wärme und Licht kombiniert. Dabei erzeugt KOO nicht nur eindrucksvolle Erlebniswelten, sondern vor allem nachhallende sensorisch-transformative Begegnungen mit und zwischen den Besucher*innen. Für die 60. Biennale von Venedig transformiert KOO das zylindrische Stahlgebäude des koreanischen Pavillons in ODORAMA CITIES: eine immersive Duftreise durch verschiedene ländliche Gebiete, Städte und Gemeinden in Süd- und Nordkorea und letztlich ein nationales Porträt der koreanischen Halbinsel. Die Publikation zur Ausstellung enthält Texte von Frank Boehm, Sooyon Lee, Lee Young June, Jessica Morgan, Luca Turin, Kyung Jin Zoh, Gedichte von Kim Hyesoon, Kim Namjo, Eva Tind, ein Interview von Grégory Couderc (mit Jean-Claude Ellena), ein Interview von Hans Ulrich Obrist (mit KOO JEONG A) und eine Einführung der künstlerischen Leitung Seolhui Lee und Jacob Fabricius. Eine Vorzugsausgabe mit Duftproben aus dem Werk in einer Schmuckkassette mit Buch erscheint ebenfalls im Sommer 2024. A Korean Scent Journey The South Korean Pavilion at the 60th Venice Biennale KOO JEONG A (b. Seoul, South Korea, 1967; lives and works everywhere) worked on reinventing spaces through participatory site-specific installations since the 1990s. KOO is internationally acclaimed for their poetic interventions into pre-existing environments with the aim to make their souls visible. By combining texts, drawings, sculptures, and installations with sounds, scents as well as elements such as wind, warmth, and light, KOOs installations and spatial interventions create formidable immersive experiences and, more importantly, transformative sensual encounters with and between the visitors. For the 60th Venice Biennale the artist will transform the cylindrical steel building of the Korean Pavilion into ODORAMA CITIES, an immersive scent journey that represents different rural areas, towns, and cities in South and North Korea. The contribution will create a captivating environment of intimacy and national portrait of the Korean peninsula. The publication accompanying the exhibition includes texts by Frank Boehm, Sooyon Lee, Lee Young June, Jessica Morgan, Luca Turin, Kyung Jin Zoh, poems by Kim Hyesoon, Kim Namjo, Eva Tind, an interview by Grégory Couderc (with Jean-Claude Ellena), an interview by Hans Ulrich Obrist (with KOO JEONG A), and an introduction by the Artistic Directors Seolhui Lee and Jacob Fabricius. A special edition box set combining the book and scent samples from the work will be released in 2024.
