Beschreibung
The landscape paintings of one of the major - and most progressive - Austrian painters of the Biedermeier era in the context of his time. Ferdinand Georg Waldmüller refutes the cliché of the cosy Biedermeier: He had set himself the task of painting the nature that surrounds us, our times, our customs. This motto true to nature united many progressive artists in the first half of the 19th century in their rejection of the Academy tradition. An emphasis on the domestic landscape was a pivotal factor in this regard. The catalogue explores Waldmüllers depictions of landscapes and, with the help of selected works by European masters such as John Constable, Johann Christian Dahl and Théodore Rousseau, views Waldmüller in the context of his time. Ed.: Arnika Groenewald-Schmidt. Text: Arnika Groenewald-Schmidt, Sarah Herring, Christian Huemer, Kati Renner, Stella Rollig.
