Transformation von Natur und KulturDie Pracht der aquatorialen Walder, die uppige Vegetation Brasiliens und die kulturellen Implikationen von Pflanzengattungen und Blumen sind in der Bildwelt von Luzia Simons (geb. 1953 in Quixada, Cearia, Brasilien; lebt und arbeitet in Berlin) fest verankert. In Aquarellen, Malereien, Fotografien und Tapisserien lotet die Kunstlerin die undurchdringbare Rolle der Natur aus und schafft durch eigens entwickelte Bildtechniken poetische Studien zu Formen und Farben. Simons ist eine Pionierin in der Entwicklung des Scanogramms - einer Medientechnik, die Elemente der Malerei und der Fotografie miteinander verbindet. Auf einem hochauflosenden Scanner arrangiert sie Bluten und Blatter verschiedenster Tulpenarten und lasst so eindrucksvolle Arbeiten von intensiver farblicher Brillanz und ungeheurer Scharfe entstehen. Dass Natur und Kultur in standiger Transformation sind und auch Identitaten niemals statisch verharren, fuhrt Simons in ihrem Werk eindrucklich vor Augen. Die Publikation Traces zeigt einen umfassenden Einblick in das uvre der Kunstlerin und gibt einen Uberblick zu den Ausstellungen der letzten drei Jahrzehnte. Transformation of Nature and CultureThe luxuriant equatorial forests and voluptuous vegetation of Brazil and the cultural implications of plant genera and flowers are integral to the imagery of Luzia Simonss (b. Quixada, Cearia, Brazil, 1953; lives and works in Berlin) art. In watercolors, paintings, photographs, and tapestries, the artist probes the impenetrable role that nature plays, employing pictorial techniques of her own devising to create poetic studies of forms and colors. Simons is a pioneer in the development of the scanograma media technique that combines elements of painting and photography. Arranging blossoms and leaves of a wide range of tulip cultivars on a high-resolution scanner, she produces imposing works that boast intense and brilliant colors and stupendous definition. Just as nature and culture are in constant transformation, identities never remain fixed: that is what Simonss work illustrates to stunning effect. The publication Traces presents a comprehensive survey of the artists oeuvre and an overview of her exhibitions of the past three decades.
