Beschreibung

Controlling the quality of new development introduced inside the historic environment represents one of the crucial tools that can help in confronting the challenges facing our cities. Present-day challenges facing the historic environment inside the Egyptian cities involve, among other things, the prevalence of run-down urban areas and the dominance of visual clutter. The enactment of the Act No. 119 and the introduction of the idea to designate areas that enjoy a distinctive value represent the first steps on the right track to develop the Egyptian experience in the management of the historic environment. This book discusses diverse subjects including the various approaches that can be adopted to design new buildings inside historic districts, the evaluation of the adaptability of new development works to their surrounding historic contexts and the various legislative tools concerned with controlling the quality of new development introduced inside the historic environment. The various examples that support the arguments adopted throughout this book are based on the authors previous academic studies and his few visits to some European countries and the United States of America.
