This unique collection of essays provides a re-evaluation of the term 'Atlantic', by placing at the core of the debate on republicanism in the early modern age the link between continental Europe and America, rather than assuming British political culture as having been widely representative of Europe as a whole.

MANUELA ALBERTONE is Professor of Modern History at the University of Turin, Italy. Her work focuses on eighteenth century French and American history and the relationship between politics and economics. ANTONINO DE FRANCESCO is Professor of Modern History at the University of Milan, Itlay. He has published numerous articles on the French and Italian democratic movements as well as a number of books, including Il governo senza testa.
