Medieval Iberia offers one of the few examples of coexistence between Jews, Muslims and Christians in pre-modern Europe. The late medieval period (13th to 15th centuries) has proven to be particularly challenging for all scholars interested in questions of cultural exchange. This book will focus on the Jewish communities and present contributions by scholars with a distinctive interest in boundaries and borders It will expand the concept of ‚borders‘ beyond the religious sphere by considering other inner and outer divides, such as geography, gender, the boundary between images and texts, and that between different literary genres. It will approach the construction of Jewish identities through questions and methodologies coming from other fields, that is, by participating in a truly interdisciplinary combined effort This book will afford readers an important opportunity to reflect on the importance of the history of religious and cultural minorities in pre-modern Europe for today’s Europeans. Reflecting upon the complexities of Jewish identities in the Late Middle Ages, a time period in which Jews (and Muslims) were part of European society, may greatly contribute, first, to the development of a new Europe that can no longer be identified exclusively with a Greco-Roman, Christian heritage; second, to halting the development of essentialist theories of race and culture; and third, to facilitating a greater understanding of the processes by which identities are formed and given meaning
