Handloom industry is a well established traditional industry located in rural and urban centres in India. The experience of growth in this industry has been a subject of study for a long time. In the context of Indian economy, Handloom industry should not only be regarded as a source of production but it should also be seen as inextricably connected with the social and economic systems of a nation.

Dr.G.J.Sudhakar,Reader and former Head of the History Department, Loyola College, Chennai. Educated in the Madras Christian College and Jawaharlal Nehru University. He has several publications to his credit, edited the book "Aspects of Madras", and the journals of "Indian History and Culture".
