The history of the Swiss colony Hungary in the historical context of the host country is intended to shed light on what motivates citizens of an old direct democracy without wars and without significant social upheavals such as Switzerland to settle in a country like Hungary, which was twice shaken by world wars in the period under study, changed the form of government and the political system, and was the scene of political violence. How did the Hungarian Swiss react to the extreme situations in Hungarian history and how strongly were they shaped by them? What are the reasons for their whereabouts and departure? What differences and correspondences exist in relation to the society of the host country? After a theoretical foundation and a brief prehistory, the work offers a comprehensive overview of the demographic and occupational development of the Swiss in Hungary between 1867 and 1990, of their embedding in the economic and socio-historical conditions in the host country, and of the institutions, organisations and persons who contributed to the preservation of Swiss identity and integration.
