Initially the Roman legionary camp of Mainz was built as a winter camp for the Germanic campaigns under Emperor Augustus. During the almost 400-year long period of occupation the stationed legions were several times involved in events of Empire-wide significance. Thus, the legionary camp of Mainz is not only considered to be one of the longest-operated military camps of the Roman Empire, but also one of the most significant. This volume presents the first extensive scientific research of this significant Roman military site for 50 years. This work presents the starting point for further research projects on the legionary camp of Mainz at the University of Freiburg.
Autorenporträt
Daniel Burger-Völlmecke studierte in Mainz Vor- und Frühgeschichte mit Schwerpunkt Provinzialrömische Archäologie. Seine Dissertation über das Mainzer Legionslager verfasste er an der Abteilung für Provinzialrömische Archäologie des Institutes für Archäologische Wissenschaften an der Universität Freiburg. Er ist wissenschaftlicher Mitarbeiter am Institut für Archäologie der römischen Provinzen an der Goethe-Universität Frankfurt.
