Walter Weibel ha studiato pedagogia, storia e filosofia all'Università di Friburgo dopo la laurea alla Stiftsschule Einsiedeln. È stato attivo per molti anni nella formazione degli insegnanti e nella politica educativa. Dopo il pensionamento ha studiato teologia all'Università di Lucerna e ha completato i suoi studi con un dottorato.
